Assists the Laboratory Supervisor in achieving efficient Laboratory operation by performing clinical tests and assuming limited administrative functions. Supports laboratory testing services by performing specimen collection and processing, quality control and maintenance functions and results reporting and verification. Participates in training and in-service programs to maintain and upgrade competency at the level required by the Supervisor as procedures are changed or added.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs quality control procedures as required by the Supervisor. Evaluates quality control results before proceeding with clinical testing. Records all quality control results and take necessary corrective actions.
Performs clinical and proficiency tests under the direct supervision of a NYSDOH qualified Supervisor.
Performs all routine scheduled equipment maintenance. Follows troubleshooting procedures when equipment malfunctions. Completes all maintenance record keeping documents.
Collects or aids in the collection of patient specimens for testing.
Acts as a resource for the staff in resolving technical, quality control and instrumentation problems.
If so designated, NYS qualified Technologist assumes assigned charge duties in the absence of the Supervisor; supervising technical personnel and reporting of findings, performing tests requiring special scientific skills and, in the absence of the Supervisor, is responsible for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures.
Hours are dependent on assigned shift and section and includes on-call as well as rotating holidays and weekends . May be required to work additional hours or shifts in emergency and unusual situations.
Observes for possible elder abuse and reports to ordering clinician.
Provides phlebotomy to patients in restraints with the assistance of nurse, physician assistant or MD.
Accurately and efficiently utilizes LIS. This includes using appropriate comments and codes, entering and monitoring QC data, daily backup and status (pending) lists.
Performs all other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE
Minimum of six (6) years experience as Medical Technologist to supervise or work autonomously.
EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology.ASCP, NCA or equivalent certification is highly recommended
