The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will report to the Nursing Service-Ambulatory & Primary Care, Specialty Clinics Section at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans, LA. This is an open continuous posting and may close before the listed closing date. A certificate will be issued every 15 days until a selection is made. The LPN must possess the knowledge, skills and self-direction to carry out and complete nursing procedures and provide nursing care in the outpatient ambulatory care setting. Duties include but not limited to: Participation in complex ambulatory procedures common to Primary Care, Dermatology, Podiatry and other medical/surgical subspecialty clinics. In addition, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) will implement treatment modalities in response to chronic and acute medical conditions. Works under the guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or medical provider with general overview by RN or medical staff. Incumbent demonstrates competency and possesses knowledge to use the nursing process to appropriately determine clinic needs based upon patient symptoms, history and medical chart entries. Incumbent will provide preventative health and chronic disease management and education, and screening inquiries allowed with the practice of nursing and approved by nursing and medical leadership. Adhere to the practice restrictions outlined in state license and facility protocols and policies. Incumbent has practical knowledge of human behavior, motivation and reactions to chronic or acute disease processes. Incumbent performs routines expected of the position and/or competency with minimal oversight to include by not limited to venipuncture, intake and assessment, injections, EKG's, vital signs, photo imaging, education, wound care etc. Perform phlebotomy services; collects, processes, prepares, stores, and packages laboratory specimens. Ensures safe and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concerns for the donor and for the quality of the specimen. Uses standard aseptic procedures and safeguards and practices infection control (Universal Precautions) in the performance of all specimen collection and processing duties. Properly identify the patient using two acceptable patient identifiers, review laboratory request for order number, accession lab orders, and ensure proper labeling and integrity of patient samples. Will record and maintain al! quality controls, operate and maintain the centrifuge and required refrigeration/cooling equipment. Recognizes the need for optimal customer service and immediate service recovery to promote the optimum patient experience. Takes all necessary precautions to avoid the spread of illness or disease when administering care to patients. Other duties as assigned.
