WORK SCHEDULE: Days WORK TYPE: Full Time (1.0 FTE) JOB SUMMARY: Geisinger’s Steele Institute for Health Innovation serves as the innovation “hub” for Geisinger. The Institute’s purpose is to support Geisinger innovators and lead the nation in building transformative, scalable, measurable and sustainable solutions that improve health, care delivery, patient experience and lower costs. The Institute provides a nontraditional environment where bold, out-of-the-box thinking can flourish and where pioneering innovators can explore, define and disseminate new models of healthcare. The Clinical Informatician will be accountable for the development, testing, and clinical implementation of mobile applications, artificial intelligence technologies, web-based tools for shared decision making, point-of-care patient data capture, and clinical decision support. These tools are designed to integrate into health care provider workflows with the express intent of improving patient-physician interactions, the delivery of guideline-based care, improving the quality of treatment recommendations and the optimization of efficient and cost-effective care. The Clinical Informatician performs duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction. This is a specialty position that integrates nursing science, computer science, human centered design and information science to manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge in clinical practice to support all patient care facilities within the Geisinger enterprise. Facilitates data integration, information and knowledge to support patients, nurses, and providers in their decision-making in all roles and settings. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processing, and information technology. Will focus on the design, structure, and presentation of information and how these issues impact clinician decision-making. Responsible for using health information technology (HIT) to improve healthcare via any of combination of higher quality, higher efficiency and new opportunities. Responsible for using resources, devices, tools and methods required to optimize information systems across Geisinger. Areas of focus include clinical guidelines, formal medical terminologies, human centered design, data analytics and information and communication systems (e.g. EHR). Receives general supervision from Senior Clinical Informaticist and reports to AVP, Product Innovation, Steele Institute for Health Innovation. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Works closely with system leadership teams to define and refine strategic plans and priorities for optimizing the use of information technology (e.g. mobile apps, web-based applications, artificial intelligence, etc.) in the delivery and management of patient care across all patient care settings. Serves as a liaison between clinicians and information systems to translate complex business needs. Assists in the user research, design and management of projects, as assigned, including defining scope (in conjunction with peers and leadership), methods, data collection, coordination of meetings, and analysis. Works collaboratively with system resources to develop and implement innovative models of care delivery across the network, including outcomes-focused, evidenced based patient care. Works across multiple teams to guide analysis & tasks to result in timely completion of IT priority items. Provides leadership to meeting project schedules and objectives. Creates and coordinates team duties, schedules, milestones, and tracking deliverables. Maintains responsibility for project definition, scope, and plan, including breakdowns of cost, major tasks, resources, critical path, and timeline. Evaluates areas where efficiency of resources can be maximized. Assists in the process for key stakeholders to prioritize key IT initiatives and evaluate critical path items. Communicates progress with sponsors. Presents milestone updates, relative adjustments, and overall satisfaction. Forecasts potential roadblocks and answers questions as needed. Provides support to system operations impacting patient care. Identifies areas to develop and implement improvement plans to increase efficiencies & drive high quality care delivery across the continuum ofcare. Participates in the coordination of efforts between IT and other departments to plan operating systems applications, acquisitions, changes, and upgrades relating to technology. May provide oversight of select IT priority initiatives to ensure desired are met. Participates in care process redesign including clinical effectiveness, service improvement and new models of care. Assists in the research and preparation of organizational policies, procedures and standards. Assists in defining appropriate performance metrics for all assigned projects/programs including facilitation for on-going monitoring. Contributes to the team by being reliable and accountable for all assignments. Performs other duties as assigned. COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS: Demonstrates strong analytical, tactical planning, user research, project management, leadership, presentation and communication skills. Experience in healthcare operations including inpatient and ambulatory settings, implementation, outcomes management, and project management in a complex healthcare environment. Demonstrates ability to take initiativeand plan/carry out responsibilities with limited direction, managing multiple teams or tasks simultaneously under strict deadlines. Experience working with business users as a project manager, assisting with projects from project initiation through to project close. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Current registered nurse with PA license required. Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree required in nursing, clinical, human-centered design, computer information systems, clinical informatics or related informatics technology, math or health administration field. Minimum of two (2) years working in direct patient care required. Minimum three (3) years of experience in healthcare operations including demonstrated experience in system design, work flow redesign and effective management related to direct patient care required. Minimum of three (3) years extensive experience with large computer systems and information technology required. OR Current registered nurse with PA license required. Minimum of four (4) years working in direct patient care required. Minimum five (5) years of experience in healthcare operations including demonstrated experience in system design, human centered design, work flow redesign and effective management related to direct patient care required. Minimum of five (5) years extensive experience with large computer systems and information technology required. Strongly prefer exposure to healthcare industry regulations, best practices, and quality and safety standards. Experience with EMR, physician relations and medico-legal issues strongly preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is typically performed in an office environment. Independent travel to clinics & campus locations is included in job duties.
